SYNOPSIS:
In 2024, Jay Capstome, Britain’s most successful inventor, unveils a groundbreaking smart-road technology set to transform Britain’s highways, promising a future that’s safer, greener, and more efficient. Capstocote is, as its slogan declares, “easy to lay, and here to stay.” The nation’s dependence on Jay Capstome began when he revolutionised reusable waste with the Tip ‘n’ Tap Toilet—making the British loo fun again—and also swept away the nation’s rubbish with the Capstome Sucks! project.
While the anticipated road surface garners widespread praise, not everyone welcomes the news. It is well known that Jay Capstome’s ingenious ideas often arrive during his cataleptic seizures—a side effect of a near-fatal road accident some years ago—but long-serving journalist at The Daily Unfold, Terry Foggett, has never fully trusted Capstome’s sudden rise or the blind devotion of his followers. When an anonymous source contacts him with a cryptic warning, Foggett begins to dig.
Meanwhile, Lisa Capstome, CEO of the Capstome Group, forecasts a bright future for the company. Thanks to her husband’s inventions and her own hugely successful crowdfunding campaigns, the company’s revenue soars into the billions. Lisa’s business acumen is indisputable, but beneath the no-nonsense exterior lies her own dark motives, as a burning fanaticism for animal rights drives her beyond the limits of the law.
By November, with nearly seventy percent of roadworks complete, Capstocote 1.0 is declared ready. The rollout is hailed as a triumph: traffic flows smoother, emissions drop, and efficiency surges across the nation’s highways. After months chasing leads to nowhere, Terry Foggett gives up hope of uncovering any evidence linking the Capstomes to wrongdoing. But as the final hours of 2024 slip away, reports of strange disruptions spark growing panic, and Foggett is left with a chilling question: Is Jay Capstome paving the road to a better Britain—or is the nation simply being set up for disaster?
